Unveiling Unity: The Noel Angel Alvarez Inclusive Playground Story

When you contemplate inclusion and inclusive play, what images or thoughts come to mind? Are they incredible ramped structures that bring kids together? Perhaps it's sensory-rich spaces designed for children with sensory disorders to find joy or a haven where they can still be part of play. Or, is it a space that extends an invitation to all, where everyone is welcome? Inclusiveness, at its core, embodies all of these aspects and much more. Yet, the true essence of inclusiveness reveals itself when individuals unite as a community, and unity in a community is not just a concept but a lived experience. It is in this unity that the power of this story truly emerges—even during the darkest of times.

In the initial stages of planning, the City of Everman enlisted our team at Whirlix Design to create a new inclusive playground—their vision of an exciting addition to the existing space at Clyde Pittman Park. With the advent of this new playground, the community eagerly anticipated the joy it would bring and the memories it would create. The city envisioned a wonderful space filled with loads of sensory and mobility-friendly play events. Design ideas were flying, and excitement was in the air. However, in March of 2023, the project took an unexpected turn, casting a shadow over the community as Noel Alvarez, a beloved young man, went missing. The project was promptly put on hold as the search for Noel intensified.

For those not acquainted with Noel's story, he is celebrated for his kindness and enthusiasm for playing with friends. As a 6-year-old grappling with various disabilities, such as a speech delay, esotropia, and physical and developmental challenges, Noel would unquestionably have cherished this playground, forming meaningful connections with numerous new friends. Regrettably, his joy was cut short, by his untimely death. If you wish to learn more about his story, visit the 'Law&Crime' article to learn more.

After Noel’s tragic disappearance, the City of Everman convened to discuss what had happened to Noel, as Mayor Richardson expressed that this tragedy had weighed heavily on the community. As of May 2023, the city council approved a resolution to name the playground after him, as the Noel Angel Alvarez Playground. This inspirational gesture of community healing profoundly touched the Whirlix Design team, and suspected it did the same for the rest of the community of Everman.

The Whirlix Design team, led by David Rushing, the Business Development Manager on the project, collaborated closely with the City of Everman in the subsequent month. Driven by a desire to contribute more to the community and enhance the current playground design, David engaged in conversations with Everman's police chief, Craig Spencer. To further bolster the project, David enlisted the support of our valued partners: Landscape Structures, ForeverLawn Texas, 2by2 Industries, Guardian Fence Rentals, and PLI Enterprises. Each partner willingly contributed to supporting the community, hoping to help bring some level of healing to the City of Everman.

In an overwhelming show of support, Whirlix Design, along with our partners, committed to significant upgrades beyond the original plan, successfully raising over $47,000 specifically for Noel. This collective effort marked a powerful experience and served as an outstanding example of what can be achieved through community fundraising and business support. Furthermore, there is an additional community organization actively working to contribute support and enhance inclusivity at the Noel Angel Alvarez Inclusive Playground, fostering even greater levels of community engagement.

As we reflect upon the journey of the Noel Angel Alvarez Inclusive Playground, it becomes clear that the power of inclusiveness extends far beyond the physical structures and design elements. In contemplating the essence of inclusion, we find ourselves envisioning spaces that go beyond structures – spaces that embody unity and welcome everyone. The playground, now more than a recreational area, stands as a powerful symbol of resilience and hope, a testament to the collaborative efforts of passionate and supportive community members. Beyond the challenges faced, this project illustrates the formidable strength found in unity. Let this inclusive playground serve as a compelling reminder that, in the face of adversity and challenge, communities can unite to create enduring beacons of hope and genuine inclusiveness.
